DVD Review – SCOTT IAN – Swearing Words In Glasgow

Megaforce Records (Release date – 10.11.14)

I was lucky enough to meet Scott Ian a few years ago at an aftershow meet and greet. He was a really nice guy who was happy to shake hands, sign autographs and, above all, chat with anyone and everyone.

When this spoken word tour was announced it seemed like a natural progression for Scott and having spent 30 odd years in the music business I was sure he would have many a tale to tell. This DVD captures his show at The Arches in Glasgow, a show I unfortunately missed at the time, so I was keen to see what stories of rock excess he had to entertain a live audience.

His stories involve meeting Lemmy for the first time in London and his attempts to match him drink for drink in the St Moritz club which ended as badly as you would expect. He also recounts an encounter with the film director Steven Spielberg who, it turns out, was a big Al Jourgensen and Ministry fan!

The main story of the night however involves the late, great Dimebag Darrell of Pantera who pulled an elaborate prank on Ian who was taken in hook, line and sinker and how revenge was had three years  later much to Dimebag’s amusement. We also learn during this tale that Dimebag called Ian ‘Baldini’ and that he was the owner of a pet goat whose goatee was dyed the same pink as Darrell’s, rock ‘n’ roll indeed!

There is also an amusing Q & A session which covers everything from tearing up during an interview with Gene Simmons to appearing on ‘Married With Children’ and his dislike of Blackie Lawless from WASP. Oh, and there’s the raffle draw, no seriously!

This DVD is a fairly low rent production, you do get the odd head passing in  shot as people head to the bar/ toilet (if you have ever had a pint in The Arches it may appear they are one and the same). Scott Ian is a good story teller just don’t expect a laugh a minute though or a Henry Rollins like intense delivery, but for a first attempt at the genre it’s a good effort from one of rock’s genuine nice guys.
