Universal (Deluxe reissue) [Released 02.02.15]
OMD’s classic 1984 album Junk Culture gets a 30th anniversary 2CD deluxe re-issue and for fans you get two unreleased songs, plus the songs previously released only on vinyl. This includes that most 1980′s musical beast the 12″ single/remix!
The album includes the hits ‘Tesla Girls’ (with a 12″ version on disc 2), ‘Locomotion’ and ‘Talking Loud And Clear’, all feature lots of synths and samples, plus the band utilized saxophone and brass to add to the sound.
They were one of the first bands to use another 80′s staple, the Fairlight which sampled everyday sounds and these could be played in various weird and wonderful ways. They must have had a ball with it on the instrumental title track.
Over on disc two we have demos and 12″ along with a real gem of a song in ‘Garden City’, which sounds like XTC. Classy quirky electronic pop. OMD were one of the few bands who did a decent 12″ version of their songs, which rather than adding boring drum beats they rejigged the arrangements.
Bit of a faux pas though with the release as one track is missing of disc two and all copies have been withdrawn. Mind you for collectors a bonus, so in every cloud a silver lining!
One of the classic 1980′s electronic pop albums and this is a stylish re-issue. ****
