DVD review: DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES – Live In Dublin

Live In Dublin

Eagle Vision [Released 30.03.15]

Recorded on last year’s whistle stop European tour in July, this was the first time Daryl Hall and John Oates had played Dublin. They give a little insight on the interviews with the pair, the only bonus feature on this DVD. The main part of their interviews sees them singing the praises of their very talented backing band.

Having been lucky enough to have seem them last year the DVD is a good memento. They really pull out some of their ‘big guns’ song wise at the start of the set with ‘Maneater’, ‘Out Of Touch’ (a classic AOR tune) and ‘Family Man’ (their reworking of the Mike Oldfield tune). The audience, all 1,600 of them, naturally lap it all up.

I am not overly keen on their 70′s tunes like ‘Back Together Again’ or ‘Las Vegas Turnaround’ as they veer into the soul/MOR that Michael McDonald does, not my musical cup of tea.

It’s worth watching just for ‘She’s Gone’ which is a real showstopper. The harmonies are spot on and their backing band really are top notch. Two strong encores with ‘Kiss On Your List’ and ‘Private Eyes’ round off an enoyable DVD.

Fans will of course want this and it shows the pair still have the voices and talent to keep their songs in the live arena. Not the most visual of stage shows, but then like Toto, Hall & Oates are more about the music and performances than any lights and spectacle sideshow. ****
