Album review: A LIGHT DIVIDED – Mirrors

A LIGHT DIVIDED - Mirrors

A Light Divided is a band out of Winston-Salem, NC and hopefully will (and rightfully should) be a name that will become synonymous with their incredible music. Typically speaking, this isn’t a band that I would stylistically jive with. Not much that is new appeals to me, however from the first note I heard of this band live, I was instantly hooked.

Taking a page from a band like Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, A Light Divided turns this genre on its ear. And I for one am glad of that. Equal parts metal, pop, and punk, this band has taken their own path with a sound frankly I never valued much…until now.

With their follow-up to the amazing album Ransom, A Light Divided has stepped up their game immensely on Mirrors. The songs flow so well together, and have a strong sense of maturity to them. With quirky titles like “Save the Cheerleader,” “Look Sharp, Ya Dumbass,” and “I’m Not Bad, I’m Just Drawn That Way,” the band veers a little away from the heaviness of the past album without losing their edge. The songs are strong, catchy, and concise.

Singer Jaycee Clark, for me, is the definite centerpiece of the music, with her powerful and emotive vocals. She packs so much punch. When you add the guitar work of Eric Humiston and James Lewis (who also provides the growls) driving these concussively heavy riffs and stunning leads, the powerful drums of Adam Smith, and the fantastic bass playing of Mike Underwood, you have such a perfect musical unit.

Anyone that checks out this band based on my suggestion should think two things: 1. this is really not the style of music I would expect Chris to listen to; and 2. I sure am glad he suggested them because they kick ass!

Unless you’re someone who stays in lock step with a particular genre or feels compelled to hate on a band because they play a style you may not love, then move along. If you love outstanding music performed by some super awesome people, then A Light Divided and their brand new album Mirrors is the band for you. And do yourself a favor and see them live, as they put on an equally impressive show.  ****1/2
