Napalm Records [Released 05.05.15]
Kamelot are back! Following on from 2013′s ‘Silverthorn’, which marked the debut of vocalist Tommy Karevik, Thomas Youngblood and co. have come back with another cracking Kamelot album. They have changed labels, leaving SPV who they have been with since 2005′s ‘The Black Halo’ album (every home should have a copy of that one) and are now with Napalm Records, who have been expanding their roster of late.
Sascha Paeth handles production duties again and guests include Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Troy Donockley (Nightwish) – he keeps popping up as guest on a few albums of late – and Charlotte Wessels (Delain).
If anything this time the band have upped the cinematic approach to their music. The duet between Tommy Karevik and Charlotte Wessels sounds like it was lifted from a film, as the listener is swept away by the majestic soundscapes.
Kamelot still know a good symphonic/melodic metal anthem as can be heard on ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Veil Of Elysium’, both quite rightly released as taster songs for the album on YouTube. ‘Here’s To The Fall’ has it all from the swooping strings and plaintive vocal backed by piano. A haunting piece of music, one of the album’s highlights for me.
Kamelot for me are a band that can appeal to the genre fans in the prog/power metal fields, plus they have a wider appeal due to their theatrical slant to their music and in vocalist Tommy Karevik, they have someone who is both powerful yet easy on those ears not used to metal music. ****
