The legendary Tubes celebrate their 40th anniversary with a UK tour in August.
The Tubes incurred the wrath of local councils and morality campaigners in the UK when they first toured in 1977, and when they sold out five consecutive nights at London’s Hammersmith Odeon. They would repeat that feat in May 1979 but not before Fee Waybill made news by falling off the stage and breaking a leg a year earlier.
The band’s “colourful” stage show was popular but expensive and after their departure from A&M Records greater emphasis was put on having a hit single and becoming financially solvent. With David Foster the band produced two more albums one of which – ‘Outside Inside’ – produced the band’s only Top 3 U.S. single ‘She’s A Beauty’.
The return of Todd Rundgren to production duties failed to arrest their inevitable decline in the mid-eighties and in 1986 Waybill left and the band soldiered on for a time with a different vocalist. A decade later – with their iconic frontman back at the helm – the band produced their latest studio album ‘Genius Of America’. They have continued to tour ever since and currently with four original members – Waybill, Roger Steen (guitar), Prairie Prince (drums) and Roger Anderson (bass) – joined by long-standing keyboard player David Medd.
On Sunday 28 June at 16:00 on Get Ready to ROCK! Radio, Fee Waybill (aka Quay Lewd, Johnny Bugger, Dr. Strangekiss etc) chats about the band from earliest times and through the trials and tribulations of local council bans, police arrest, injury and scrapped albums.
Part 2 of this two-part feature is scheduled for 16:00 on Sunday 5 July. Throughout July more Tubes music will be added to the radio station’s general playlists.
The tour kicks off at Bristol, The Fleece on August 3, followed by Brighton Concorde 2 (August 4), Southampton, The Brook (August 6), London Clapham Grand (August 7), Manchester Club Academy (August 8), Glasgow, The Art School (August 9), Leeds Brudenell Arts Club (August 11), Edinburgh Liquid Rooms (August 12), and Wolverhampton Robin 2 (August 13).
