Ferrum [Release date 08.06.15]
This is the 5th album release from W Angel’s Conquest, Ukraine’s oldest power metal outfit apparently, I will take their word for that. Formed back in 1996 by guitarist W Angel this album is being hailed as a bit of a change in direction for the band, not being familiar with the band I can’t comment on the back catalogue but if this album is anything to go by, the band are doing something right.
‘Taste Of Life’ is a full on power metal workout with breakneck riffage and rapid rhythms which would give Dragonforce a run for their money. W Angel certainly knows his way around the fret board and brings to mind Yngwie Malmsteen at times. The rest of the band have no trouble keeping up with his pace though and the playing throughout is highly impressive.
On songs like ‘Revolution’ and ‘Mirror of Truth’ the band shift seamlessly between time signatures and keys to produce a polished sound. Big melodies and choruses are the order of the day and as with all good power metal the vocal harmonies are spot on throughout.
The only thing about the album is it is a bit one paced and a frantic one at that. A little more subtlety at some points would have broken things up and given the poor drummer a break, the man could power a small village!
Overall though this is an enjoyable power metal romp which will appeal to those who like their metal fast and furious. ***1/2
