Album review: LIFELINE – Scream

LIFELINE - Scream

Escape Music www.escape-music.com [Release date 23.10.15]

Lifeline have an interesting line-up on this one with two vocalists, namely Nigel Bailey (Three Lions/Bailey) and Lee Small (Shy/Phenomena), who are joined by guitarist Paul Hulme (Demon and Lawless, where he is the vocalist), drummer Steve Clarkson and keyboards player Andy Bailey (Three Lions/Bailey).

I was not overly taken by the Three Lions or Bailey albums, however this album is really good and then some. Nigel Bailey again writes the majority of the songs and there is a subtle use of keyboards here and there which adds greatly to the songs.

‘Jezebel’ is the single, which is catchy tune, however the two stand out songs for me are ‘Far From Home’ and ‘Nightmare Dream’. ‘Far From Home’ recalls Dare circa their ‘Blood From Stone’ album and the guitar riffs and solos are excellent. ‘Nightmare Dream’ is a brooding song dealing with the innocence lost in war and is an excellent song.

Only one ballad on here, ‘Now His Angels Gone’ and the vocals shine over a melodic arrangement. They are very good at the hard rock romps where the lyrics and music are upbeat as can be heard on ‘Destination Freedom’.

Nigel Bailey or Lee Small take the lead on a song, with the other often adding lines at the chorus. Lee Small really reminds me of Glenn Hughes at times, albeit the 80′s era Hughes and in particular on the Phenomena albums.

This is a very classy debut full of high quality hard rock songs and highly recommended. ****
