By 1985 the classic Clash line-up was over and Mark II had taken their place- they looked good and sounded good, but they were not The Clash. The pressure of this and the impending split of the new band led to front man Joe Strummer doing a runner to Spain where he spent time avoiding this and reflecting on past mistakes.
This new documentary comes in both Spanish and English editions, although be prepared for many, many subtitles throughout, and tells the story of Strummers time in Spain. The whole project started off the back of a radio interview at the 1997 Glastonbury festival in which Strummer told of the car he bought whilst in Spain- he loved the Dodge and wondered if anyone could track it down?
The footage offers interviews with friends and musicians from his time in Spain, most notably collaborators such as 091 and Radio Fortuna, plus footage of pre-Clash band the 101ers, old Clash footage and interviews with members of Clash Mark II.
Film maker Nick Hall’s film is an enjoyable affair and to say whether, or not, they located the Dodge Dart would ruin the surprise for you. The deluxe edition of the DVD comes in a great package with various memorabilia – the best piece of which is a cassette containing the very interview that sparked the film. ***
