Album review: TANGERINE DREAM – Out Of This World (Vinyl Edition)

TANGERINE DREAM - Out Of This World

Invisible Hands Music [Release date (vinyl): 11.12.15]

Released in memory of Edgar Froese, founding member of the legendary electronic rock pioneers Tangerine Dream who sadly passed away in January 2015, ‘Out Of This World’ is a compilation of the band’s later work assembled by Froese’s widow, Bianca Froese-Acquaye – apparently a selection of tracks that meant the most to her.

Whether fans of the band will feel the same is a moot point.

There are innumerable collections out there of TD’s ‘best of’, ‘greatest’, ‘anthologies’, call them what you will, and with a band that have released over one hundred albums picking any sort of selection is bound to divide opinion.

This release however is given a little more credence insofar as it is the personal choice of Edgar’s widow, but it is all culled from the final albums that Tangerine Dream released where the innovative, pioneering spirit of their early work had been somewhat tempered by their sheer longevity.

Nontheless, for fans of the band, this is an essential purchase, being a Numbered Limited Edition (5,000), double gatefold, double LP pressed on 140g orange vinyl – archetypical of what’s known in the trade as a ‘nice item’.

So, an essential buy for fans, but for anyone new to the band and looking to explore their music I would point them in the direction of their early work with ‘Ricochet’, ‘Phaedra’, ‘Rubycon’ and ‘Zeit’ as good a place to start as any.

However, as an appropriate tribute to a musical genius, this’ll do.  ****
