DVD review: BLACK VEIL BRIDES – Alive and Burning

BLACK VEIL BRIDES - Alive and Burning

Eagle Vision [Release date 25.09.15]

There is no doubt about it, Black Veil Brides are a great live band, heavy as you like yet melodic throughout. Formed in 2006, and having released 4 acclaimed albums, the band are part Motley, part Maiden and, whisper it quietly, but Is that a little bit of Malmsteen I can detect in that there guitar work?

‘Alive and Burning’ was filmed at Hollywood’s Wiltern Theatre, and featuring some of the band’s best known material, this 17 song set (plus ‘80’s style drum solo- drummer Christian “CC” Coma is straight out of the Tommy Lee school of drumming) is a relative masterclass in taking your musical influences and creating with that some of the best modern rock music around.

Songs including “Heart of Fire”, “Faithless”, “Knives & Pens”, “Rebel Love Song”, “Fallen Angels”, “Sweet Blasphemy” and “In The End” show why the band have been nominated for Kerrang’s Best Live Band award, however, it is a cover of Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell” that steals the show for me.

Whilst stadium gigs will soon become a thing of the past, as long as there are bands like Black Veil Brides then arena shows will live on.  ****
