Album review: AARON NEVILLE – Apache

Tell It Records [Released 15.07.16]

Aaron Neville releases his latest album to mark not only his 75th birthday, but also the 50th anniversary of his first number one single, ‘Tell It Like It Is’ (also a hit for Heart in the early 80′s). The album is produced by Eric Krasno (Lettuce/Tedeschi Trucks Band)

Aaron Neville’s voice has lost none of its smooth, soul sound and opener ‘Be Your Man’ with its 70′s cop show backing is a rousing start to proceedings. It is an album of reflection as he pays homage to his childhood on ‘Stompin Ground’ and I am sure the romantic leanings of ‘Orchid In The Storm’ will appeal to many loving couples. Yes the latter is possibly over sentimental, however his vocal is so soothing it draws the listener in.

Musically Aaron Neville visits all the places he has in the past, be it gospel, soul, R&B and a little New Orleans. The musicianship is first class as you’d expect and the closing ‘Fragile World’ (where he name checks a Tears For Fears song) is a very timely song in the current world situation.

A fitting album to mark his birthday and 50 years in the charts, although making hit music is not his goal, more to create music that lasts and can be enjoyed by all. He has achieved that and more on this album. ****
