Lost Boy Records [Release date 16.12.16]
Norwegain songwriter Thom Hell has already released seven albums prior to this one and he has three Norwegain Grammys to his name. On this latest album he wanted to embark on a musical journey through history and adding his own take to sounds and styles. There are hints of the Beatles, 10CC, Elton John and the Divine Comedy throughout the music on here.
One interesting diversion are the various instrumentals dotted throughout the album, including the opner ‘Grow Up!’, which shows his love of mixing strings and piano, a constant theme theoughout the album.
Thom’s voice is gentle and melodic, recalling the Beachboys on ‘Blues In A’ (a song that beautifully melds strings and a guitar solo, Jeff Lynne would be impressed!). He certainly knows his way around a radio friendly melody as can be heard on ‘Leave Me To Die’, pop rock bliss. The title track is about his new born son and although very personal to him, the song will resonate with any parent.
Maybe not a name that well known outside of his native Norway, however that should all change given this rather wonderful album of pop rock gems. Perfectly timed just in time for Christmas as well! ****
