News: GORDON GILTRAP releases new album and radio interview (January 2017)

Gordon Giltrap

Gordon Giltrap may be best known for his 1978 hit single ‘Heartsong’ but his 50 year-plus career has positioned him as one of the most influential and progressive acoustic guitar players.

Gordon was influenced by the sixties folk greats Bert Jansch, Davey Graham and John Renbourn but went on to forge his own unique style which also embraced the progressive rock genre in the late-1970s.  His band and albums included future Marillion drummer Ian Mosley as well as bassist John Gustafson who had also played in Roxy Music and Ian Gillan’s band.

His work has frequently melded guitar and orchestral sounds and his latest album is a collaboration with Paul Ward with whom he has collaborated for some years.  ‘The Last Of England’ incorporates a popular collection of songs known as ‘The Brotherhood Suite’ which first appeared in the 1990s.  Now newly re-recorded, Ward’s sympathetic orchestral arrangements give an extra dimension.

The album is released on 20 January via Angel Air Records who this year celebrate their 20th anniversary.

Gordon is the subject of Get Ready to ROCK! Radio’s ‘Eclectic Mix’ on Sunday 15 January, when David Randall chats to him about his music and including tracks from the new album.

David is a long-time fan and says “I last saw Gordon playing in a major guitar festival in Merseyside.  It was memorable for not just the music but the fact that I was breathalysed on the way home.  Fortunately I hadn’t been drinking, but surely the police would realise that you need full concentration at a Gordon Giltrap gig and nothing should impair enjoyment of his considerable dexterity.”
