Frontiers [Release date 12.05.17]
Now, there is no getting away from the fact that the late Jani Lane was one hell of a songwriter and left behind some stand out songs from the Sunset Strip era. However, Warrant these days is fronted by Robert Mason and has been since 2008. Mason is a great choice to step into Lane’s shoes, if you’ve seen the band recently you will no doubt agree, and alongside the remaining members of the original band keeps the Warrant flag flying.
New album “Louder, Harder, Faster” finds the band in fine form. The album’s title track is an opening statement of intent that is followed up by “Devil Dancer”. There is the customary ballad in “U In My Life”, the big sounding “Perfect” and “Let It Go” and the slow groove rock n roll of bonus track “I Think I’ll Just Stay Here and Drink”.
But for me the tracks that win hands down here are “Only Broken Heart”, “New Rebellion”, “Choose Your Fate” and the acoustically opened “Music Man”. Then you have a track that is perfect classic rock and perfect for Warrant today, it sounds like it could be radio platinum from the bands classic era, “Faded”.
Warrant today are as good as they ever were, and whilst they may not write another “Cherry Pie” what they are producing will keep every fan of the Hair Metal era happy – “Louder, Harder, Faster” is packed with hooks, harmonies, big guitars and great songs and there are not many of those bands still going that can create something this good, or fresh sounding. ****
