Album review: ALESTORM – No Grave But The Sea

ALESTORM - No Grave But The Sea

Napalm Records [Release date 26.05.17]

Pirate metal heroes Alestorm are back to wreck havoc! If you have not heard the folk metal shenanigans of Alestorm you really are missing out. They weave many a piratical and sea faring tale, taking a little folk, a lot of metal and some very humorous lyrics.

Take ‘F***ed With An Anchor’, my you wouldn’t play this one to your mother! It is such a catchy tune though, with accordion/keytar, guitars and a rousing metal beat. ‘Pegleg Potion’ is a real metal beast melding speed metal and another damn fine melodic tune. Mind you after listening to the lyrics not sure it is a potion many would enjoy, as it includes ‘monkey brains and the scrapings from your knees’.

Christopher Bowes (he is also in Gloryhammer, another band worth seeking out) keeps the good ship Alestorm on course with his vocals and the fact he wrote all but one song on his own.  A good example is the title track where the pomp keys mix well with the metal guitar riffs, creating a beast of a tune.

Great fun from start to finish, so what are you waiting for? Set sail to your local record store (or online shop for you modern landlubbers), and grab this little beauty of an album. ****
