Jon Stevens has fronted some big bands in his time including Noiseworks, INXS following the death of Michael Hutchence and he was the original singer in the Dead Daisies. On his latest solo album (which has already been released in Australia and made number 16 in the album charts) he is joined by Dave Stewart (Eurythmics), who co-wrote and produced the album, as well as playing guitar.
It is a good mix of songs, from the opening fast paced hard rocker ‘Hold On’ (featuring Richie Sambora) through to the closing gospel tinged ‘All About The People’, Jon Stevens shows he can sing in many musical styles.
Few intriguing curveballs dotted throughout the album, with the major one being the sleazy soul on ‘F.U.C’ where he duets with Mahaut (another Dave Stewart connection as he produced her debut album). Hypnotic rhythms and the two singers really make this song special. Another soulful tune is ‘Something About You’ where he duets with Vanessa Amorosi and guess what? Yes she’s working on new music with Dave Stewart. That man gets everywhere…
‘Feel Like Letting Go’ has an immense chorus and crystal clear production, Jon Stevens seems to be putting his all into this one. The song’s overall sound and feel reminds you a little of a Jeff Lynne production.
Jon Stevens is the Australian Bryan Adams, happy to rock out when needed and just as happy to follow his musical muse be it rock, blues, some soul or a little gospel. Enjoyable from start to finish, only one little quibble is that the album clocks in at just under forty minutes. Still quality wins over quantity any day of the week. ****
