Album review: AUDREY HORNE – Blackout

Napalm Records [Release date 12.01.17]

Norwegian hard rockers Audrey Horne return with their sixth album and first in three years since 2014′s ‘Pure Heavy’. Now that album and its predecessor, ‘Youngblood’ had some real first pumping anthems, however ‘Blackout’ lacks any real top notch anthems to match those two albums. That said, give the album a few plays (not always easy in these days of so many bands demanding your listening attention) and it does start to scale the lofty heights of the impressive albums that came before it.

Songs like ‘This Is War’, with the band unleashing their inner Iron Maiden, and the Thin Lizzy dual guitar solos on the title track really rock out and then some. The slower paced ‘This Man’ seems to drag a little, despite the use of keys and a catchy chorus.

‘Midnight Man’ would make a decent single/video release, with a strong sing-a-long chorus and vocal from Toschie. The drum/percussion intro to ‘Light The Way’ is pretty damn fine, however the plodding ‘Satellite’ is a real filler track.

Audrey Horne have a decent enough album here in ‘Blackout’, not a patch on the past two albums though. Will keep their fans happy but don’t think it will win them many new ones. ***1/2
