AOR Heaven [Release date 26.01.18]
Blood Red Saints return with their second album and joining the original trio of Pete Godfrey (vocals), Rob Naylor (bass) and Lee Revill (guitars) are guitarist Neil Hibbs (ex-Shy) and Andy Chemney on drums. There are a couple of interesting co-writes and they have a new record label after their debut album ‘Speedway’ was released on Frontiers.
Opening with possibly the album’s heaviest song ‘Another Freak’ shows the band have upped their guitar crunch and vocalist Pete Godfrey still has that air of Jon Bon Jovi in his singing style. There are some serious Def Leppard approved backing vocals on this album, none more so than ‘Wake Up’ – an album stand out. Another clear stand out is ‘Sometimes’, one of those melodic rock tunes made for blasting out loud on a summer’s day.
Blood Red Saints don’t forget to add an obligatory ballad and ‘Arms Wide Open’ will have your mobile phone aloft when played live or indeed singing along in the comfort of your own home…
Two outside writers appear on the album. First up Paul Laine, of Danger Danger/The Defiants fame, who also sings on ‘It Is Over’, a beast of a hard rock tune and so damn catchy. The guitar and synth riffs work very well indeed on this one. Next up Steve Brown (Trixter/Tokyo Motor Fist) co-wrote ‘Turn Up The Night’, another big riff and chorus, making for a perfect ending to a mighty fine album.
A mighty fine slab of melodic hard rock to start off 2018 in fine style and highly recommended. ****
