[Release date 16.03.18]
Nashville singer songwriter Korby Lenker chose to record his seventh album, not in the studio, but in places that resonated with him his guitar and vocals being captured in places as diverse as the edge of the Snake River Canyon, a cabin north of Sun Valley, and his undertaker father’s mortuary.
He then spent months on the road collecting vocals and instrumental contributions from nearly 30 of folk’s finest current talents recording in backyards, hotel rooms, and even a bookstore.
The result is a collaborative one with Lenker sharing song writing credits on seven of the album’s twelve tracks and, despite the players and harmony vocalists varying from song to song, there’s a really cohesive feel to the set.
Gentle, unassuming, and largely acoustic, it reminds on several levels of the calming, ethereal qualities of the likes of Lisa Hannigan, counterbalanced by the observational playfulness of Paul Simon on songs like ‘Nothing Really Matters’, ‘Book Nerd’ and ‘Father To The Man’. There’s even hints of Bono (in one of his less bombastic moments) in Lenker’s breathy delivery on the excellent opener ‘Thousand Springs’, and the restrained ‘Love Is The Only Song’.
An album for those ‘quieter moments’ and one that rewards repeated listening, Lenker will be playing several promotional UK dates in April. ***½
