The Poodles add to the growing list of rock acts who have released a covers album in the past few years. On ‘Prisma’ they tackle a variety of genres and eras, including a few surprise pop choices.
Jakob Samuel is in fine voice as you’d expect, with his soaring vocals replacing the guitar effects on the Poodles’ version of ‘Crazy Horses’ by the Osmonds. Their rocked up version of Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Go Your Own Way’ works well too and benefits from a rocked up guitar sound.
‘Don’t You Worry Child’ by the Swedish House Mafia may put off a few, although it is a cracking melodic rock version they do on here, albeit they keep the dance beat with plenty of keys/harmony vocals. Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ just doesn’t seem to work - it lacks the spark and drive of the original and they seemed to have gone too heavy on their version. Adele’s ‘Set Fire To The Rain’ is another unexpected choice, if they did this at Eurovision they would get a warm reception I am sure. It’s not cheesy, just has that crossover appeal outside of rock fans.
The Poodles do show their rock roots though with an impassioned version of Deep Purple’s ‘Soldiers Of Fortune’, one of the album’s stand outs along with the aforementioned ‘Go Your Own Way’.
Not a bad set of covers, done in the Poodles style and a good stop gap until their next studio outing. Certainly an album for the fans, plus they may pick up a few listeners if they hear these covers on a playlist/radio. Be interesting to see where the Poodles go musically from here as guitarist Henrik Bergqvist has left the band, at least for 2018′s live plans, to be replaced by Rob Marcello (Danger Danger/The Defiants). ***1/2
