Album review: JEAN BEAUVOIR – Rock Masterpieces Vol 1

Jean Beauvoir has a had a long and varied career working with Kiss, the Plasmatics, an album with cult faves Voodoo X and melodic rockers Crown Of Thorns, whose 1993 debut album featured Beauvoir alongside Micki Free, who together created some classic tunes.

The title track, the insanely catchy ‘Hike It Up’, ‘Secret Jesus’ and ‘Standing On The Corner For Ya’ all feature off that album on this compilation. ‘Standing On The Corner For Ya’ is a different version featuring a gospel backing, more keys than the original and it works really well. This version was released as a single last year.

Elsewhere we have some other Crown Of Thorns treats in the shape of ‘Faith’ and ‘Rock Ready’. From Voodoo X’s ‘The Awakening’ album we have the title track and the excellent ’Voodoo Queen’ which still sounds great all these years later. Volume two is due out early next year and hopefully we may even seen some of Crown Of Thorns activity before then. Well we can always hope!

Jean Beauvoir has been involved with and produced plenty of memorable songs, many of which are on here and this is a perfect place to start if you are new to the music of Jean Beauvoir or only know of his Crown Of Thorns albums. Speaking of Crown Of Thorns make sure you have their debut album in your collection, a classic album and a real ‘must have’. ****
