Anderstein Music [Release date 25.05.18]
I’ve seen it all now! A female fronted melodic Italian pop/rock band debut, with sci-fi imagery/artwork, and on a Japanese label – complete with obi strip bearing those immortal words ‘Made In Japan’. Now that’s what I call rock ‘n’ roll.
Except, in the case of Earth For Sale, perhaps it’s not.
Formed in 2014, and fronted by the alluring Silvia Reale (who could be Claudia Winkleman’s ‘hot’ younger sister) Earth For Sale ‘turns back time’ to the mid to late eighties when the airwaves were dominated by the likes of Cher.
And the lead single ‘Life’ has all the hallmarks of the best of the AOR era on display – a wonderfully catchy tune (courtesy of songwriting team Marco Vecchio (guitars) and Stefano Brusa (keys)) and with a big chorus, Reale’s fabulous vocals, and soaring guitar breaks. My appetite was well and truly wetted.
Unfortunately, while Reale’s performance is never less than stunning, and while Reset remains time locked three decades in the past, the band aren’t sadly locked in to the rock genre, instead careering though a power pop set that is just as much indebted to music that served as a backdrop to films like Fame, Footloose and Flashdance.
So there’s just as much soul and funk infused power pop on display. And that may not be such a bad thing except it’s all delivered a bit earnestly, and without much by way of a change of pace and ultimately ends up sounds, well, a bit ‘Eurovision’.
It’s a shame because Reale is quite a ‘find’ and Vecchio puts in a more than workmanlike performance. A bit more by way of focus, and they could be contenders. ***
