The Shrewsbury based Rainbreakers have now recorded their debut album, after releasing a couple of well received EPs and touring with the likes of Corky Laing (Mountain) and played a handful of festivals. Comprised of Ben Edwards (vocals, rhythm guitar), Charlie Richards (lead guitars), Peter Adams (bass) and Sam Edwards (drums), they take late 60′s/early 70′s soulful blues and give it a modern polish, always with an ear for a decent melody.
‘Heavy Soul’ is a good indication of the music within, soulful blues coupled with lyrics that have meaning. The title track and ‘Lost In You’ both feature exquisite laid back blues playing from Charlie Richards. The latter has that timeless air of the Dobie Gray classic ‘Drift Away’. Mind you when required Charlie Richards can increase the rock guitar quota, soloing away on ‘Need Your Love’.
Although they cite the Black Keys as an influence, at many moments throughout the course of the album they recall Free. In vocalist Ben Edwards they have someone whose singing makes you sit up and take notice. Any number of the songs on here could easily gain airplay on BBC Radio 2, giving Maroon 5 a run for their money.
Rainbreakers have the songs – boy do they have the songs – and they just need a little bit of luck to break them into the big time. The EPs promised we were in for something special on their debut album and they delivered. ****
