Album review: LOS PACAMINOS – Viva!

Recado Records [Release date 02.11.18]

To describe Los Pacaminos as Paul Young’s band is slightly misleading, although he assembled the seven piece Tex Mex outfit back in 1992, the bands members are each of a high calibre and indeed highly accomplished with the group’s collective CV including stints with Queen, Robbie Williams, Tom Jones and more.

New live album “Viva!” finds the band in fine form and actually captures the spirit of the live performance. The set list mixes originals and cover versions and anyone expecting the 80’s pop/soul Paul Young would be disappointed as the band delivers good time Tex Mex, blues and country rock ‘n’ roll.

Of the eighteen tracks on offer here I would recommend starting with “Highway Patrol”, the ZZ Top Lite like “Saved” and the closing salvo of “Our Favourite Things”, “Woolly Bully” and “La Bamba”. But that is just for starters as Squeeze’s Chris Difford joins the band for a Mexicana flavoured run through “Take Me I’m Yours” (re-christened “Tex Me I’m Yours” for the night) and if you want a country ballad thrown in then look no further than “Caballero”.

Having seen the band live I can confirm that their average gig is as much fun as this CD sounds like they are having on stage. Then you realise that what could be considered as a side project has actually had a longer lifespan then most bands manage these days, not a bad effort. If you see Los Pacaminos are playing near you, try and get along as you are guaranteed a good night out. ****
