Album review: LASTWORLD – Time

LASTWORLD - Time

MelodicRock Records [Release date 12.04.19]

LastWorld is guitarist/multi-instrumentalist/songwriter Jim Shepherd and vocalist David Cagle, who joined forces after approaching their label separately as each wanted to create more new music.

It is a good pairing, with Jim Shepherd recently releasing ‘Jaded’ and David Cagle was half of the JK Northrup & David Cagle album released last year (both albums are well worth seeking out). JK Northrup helps on ‘Time’ with the mastering, whilst Shepherd produced the album.

‘Time’ and ‘Walk Away’ are upbeat, good time melodic rockers with plenty of keys and a couple of storming guitar solos. The sort of songs Night Ranger would like a go at.

Cagle and Shepherd can do a good ballad too as ‘I Can Only Be Me’ shows. Cagle really gets to show the emotional side of his singing on this one. Not be outdone the song features another top draw guitar solo from Shepherd.

Both ‘Just Another Day’ and ‘Fallen’ reminded me of Enchant, not only in the vocals of David Cagle but the proggy keys and rhythm.

The bonus track ‘Lose You Now’ is one of the album’s highlights, featuring lovely sax playing from Jim Shepherd. One of those songs that would have graced the airwaves back in the 80s.

A good team-up in LastWorld and a solid debut. Hopefully Cagle and Shepherd will work together again soon, until then we can enjoy ‘Time’. ***1/2
