If you are a fan of the likes of Vandenberg’s MoonKings or MTV era Whitesnake then you are going to love “Perennials”, the new album from Sweden’s Black Paisley. Following on from 2017’s “Late Bloomer” debut, this is an album that is steeped in rich classic rock traditions, even though the band have only been together since 2014.
The album plays to both the strengths of the power ballad, in this case “Stronger” and the Bon Jovi like “Sometimes”, and the heavier tracks like first single “I Want Your Soul”, “Step Back” and “Mother”, the former also being my favourite track on the album. “Out of My Life”, “Trying” and the mid paced “Miss Me” also deserve a mention, as does “Without You” which is a good AOR meets big Euro ballad (complete with subtle female vocals) which is the kind of song that could easily be heard on many a summer holiday at any time in the last 30 years.
Black Paisley may be a band that was formed in the latter half of its member’s careers but it is also a band that feels like it has been around for a lot longer than its five years. “Perennial” is an album that I can see myself returning to again and again and I would like to see how it translates into a live show. ****
