Frontiers [Release date 09.08.19]
Soleil Moon formed as a collaboration between singer Larry King (Michael Thompson Band) and keyboardist John Blasucci (Dennis De Young) back in 1999 and have released two albums to date, both of which any self-respecting AOR fan should have in their collection.
Michael Thompson not only guests on the album but agreed that the memorable opening track ’72 Camaro’ should appear on a Soleil Moon album as it was personal to Larry King (it was originally intended for a Michael Thompson Band album). Larry King has a knack of mixing autobiographical moments into many of the songs. This song and ‘Can’t Go On’ are at the rockier end of the album, the latter featuring plenty of guitar from Michael Thompson. Another fine guitar solo from Thompson appears on ‘Halfway To Nowhere’.
‘Here For You’ is one of those genre defining AOR songs, full of passion and melody, not unlike Survivor in their heyday. ‘Just So You Know’ is another monster of an AOR tune, with Night Ranger’s Kelly Keagy amongst the co-writers on this song.
‘You And I’ is a bit different from the rest of the album with a modern pop vibe and backing, maybe not for all but you can’t deny it is a darn catchy tune! Not sure who the co-vocalist is on this one but they suit the song perfectly.
Soleil Moon’s secret weapon are the vocals of Larry King, who packs so much emotion into his singing and helps Soleil Moon stand out from a crowded field of similar bands. One of the best AOR/melodic rock albums you will hear this year guaranteed. ****
