Album review: A NEW TOMORROW – Universe

A NEW TOMORROW - Universe

Frontiers [Release date 06.12.19]

Formed during 2009 by vocalist/guitarist Alessio Garavello (ex-Power Quest, Arthemis) and bassist Andrea Lonardi, the two were later joined by Tim Hall (drums) and Michael Kew (guitars). Another band marking Frontiers move into signing newer bands outside of the usual melodic rock and new breed of classic rock bands they have been releasing of late.

They mention Alter Bridge as one of their big influences and you can certainly hear that on the opening duo of ‘I Wanna Live’ and ‘A Million Stars’. Alession Garavello certainly hits the soaring high notes still as he did on those Power Quest albums he appeared on. One thing this album isn’t though is a Power Quest soundalike!

Sadly though the album does have some average songs like ‘Multitude Of Nothing’ and the final track on the album the heavily narrated ‘Abrasive’, you are unlikely to play often. Nice idea to create their own narrated story set to heavy riffing, just not sure it really fits in with the rest of the album.

‘Golden Sands’ and ‘…Home’ are other highlights, the former mixing a little prog metal with Alter Bridge, whilst the latter is a gentler affair, showing the softer side of Garavello’s vocals. Both feature some of the best guitar work on the album.

A solid effort with the opening couple of songs, ‘Golden Sands’ and ‘…Home’ deserving of making any modern metal playlist. They just needed a couple more ‘must hear’ songs to make them more known in a very crowded market place. ***
