Quick plays: SANGUINE, GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR

SANGUINE - Cold Blood

SANGUINE Cold Blood   [Release date 06.13.19]

Sanguine caught this reviewer’s attention with their 2016 release ‘Black Sheep’, where they successfully melded melodic metal riffs with the impressive vocals of Tarin Kerrey, along with some screamo vocals from guitarist Nick Magee (drummer Matt Field and bassist Ross Andrew complete Sanguine’s line-up). They have been out on the road since then supporting the likes of Fear Factory and Skindred.

They continue where ‘Black Sheep’ left off, with opener ‘Pressure’ a monster of a tune, full of riffs and the vocal trade-off between Kerrey and Magee. Other stand outs include ‘Lonesome’ and ‘Summer Son’, both of which link into the album’s overall theme of songs for people who feel they have nothing and the lost connections many have in the world today. Sanguine can be uplifting yet brutally honest at the same time in their lyrics, a rare and welcomed talent.

Sanguine have done it again, producing melodically filled metal songs with thoughtful and passionate lyrics. Surely Sanguine can now gain the wider success they deserve? ***1/2

GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR - Live at Trent Poly Sports Hall Nottingham 1977

GRAHAM PARKER & THE RUMOUR Live at Trent Poly Sports Hall Nottingham 1977 The Store For Music

Graham Parker and the Rumour started in 1975 and they soon became a mainstay of the pub rock scene popular at that time, often augmented at times by a four-man horn section known as The Rumour Horns. They even made ‘Top of the Pops’ performing their version of The Trammps’ ‘Hold Back the Night’ (included on this CD) from The Pink Parker EP, a Top 30 UK hit, the same year that this live concert was recorded. It is another of the live radio broadcasts now getting a CD through Store For Music/Angel Air. No sleeve notes sadly, which would make these releases feel a bit more special.

Not a bad live quality recording and as the recording featured the aforementioned Rumour Horns, they add greatly to the sound. ‘Sweet On You’ and ‘Fools Gold’ are classy tunes, reminiscent of Southside Johnny, who supported Graham Parker on this tour. ‘Hold Back The Night’ is included and you can see why it was a hit back then.

Graham Parker never really became a household name, but undeterred he still tours to this day.

One really for the die-hards as live albums are not always the best way to introduce yourself to an artist. ***
