SPV/Steamhammer [Release date 07.02.20]
It’s got touches of country, it’s got a bit of blues, it’s got rock n roll- but most importantly it’s got attitude, swagger and riffs a plenty. It is “Play That Rock n Roll” and it is the new album from legendary band Supersuckers, and the three piece are sounding as fine as ever.
“Ain’t Gonna Stop (Until I Stop It)” is a good introduction to the rest of the album whilst “Getting Into Each Others Pants” is a great song with a great title. There are nods to 70’s glam rock in “That’s A Thing” and “You Ain’t The Boss of Me”, the former reminding me of “Tiger Feet”. Then we have “A Certain Girl”, a track that has a feel of 60’s girl groups and a passing touch of old Alice Cooper to it, or the country bluesy romp that is title track “Play That Rock n Roll”, a song that namechecks both The Ramones and Motorhead and tells it exactly as it is.
The word highlight is a difficult one when it comes to this album as Eddie Spaghetti and the boys have created a record that is excellent from start to finish. For example, there is a great cover of Michael Monroe’s “Dead, Jail or Rock n Roll” (if you have never heard the original of this then I would strongly suggest checking out both versions), then there is the straight ahead rock n roll of “Bringing It Back”, “Last Time Again “ and “Die Alone” or album closer “Ain’t No Day”, which has a feel of Duff McKagan’s solo output and may well be the best track on the album.
So, there you have it, “Play That Rock n Roll” is an album that I can thoroughly recommend, and I would suggest that a cold beer accompanies your listening enjoyment. *****
