Frontiers [Release date 14.02.20]
Archon Angel is a new project born from a meeting between producer/guitarist Aldo Lonobile (Secret Sphere) and former Savatage and Circle II Circle vocalist Zak Stevens during the making of Timo Tolkki’s Avalon’s Return To Eden album. It also features Frontiers ‘go to’ man Alessandro del Vecchio (who is a bandmate of Aldo in Edge Of Forever) even co-wrote one of the songs.
Archon Angel wanted to recreate the magical sound of Savatage, which they do on occasion notably on Return Of The Storm – the piano intro and layered vocals hit the spot nicely – and the excellent The Serpent. On the flip side ‘Hit The Wall’ is a real plodder and overall it is not an album you would be playing much after a couple of months.
Archon Angel trie hard to capture the Savatage sound, which they certainly did in the vocals as Zak Stevens sounds as good as ever, however many of the songs fail to hit the mark. If the remaining members of Savatage got together then we could have an album on our hands.
Would have made an EP of good songs and certainly worth a listen if you are a fan of Zak Stevens. ***
