India Electric Co. – the duo comprising of vocalist Cole Stacey and multi-instrumentalist Joseph O’Keefe – are back with their second album, five years on since their debut, ‘The Girl I Left Behind Me’ was released. Not that they have been quiet as they released a trilogy of EPs, all of which are well worth tracking down for a listen.
‘The Gap’ explores new musical avenues as we have come to expect from the duo, inlcluding Bembé rhythms, Irish folk melodies and Sarojini Naidu’s words. The album began life in England and travelled through seven different countries until being completed in New Zealand earlier this year, when the India Electric Co. were supporting Midge Ure.
‘Statues’ has been played already on radio, an obvious choice given its instant melody and hypnotic pizzicato violin motif.
Glad to see ‘Parachutes’ on here, which although it has been released on one of the EPs, is one of the band’s finest songs to date. Sums up their sound nicely, taking British folk as its starting point then adding in the wistful, melodic vocals of Cole Stacey and a tip of the hat to Tears For Fears.
‘Tempest I & II’ close the album, showing the band’s more synth/progressive side, although the violin and Eastern percussion keep the song’s folk basis.
I will be honest and say this album took a little longer to ‘get into’ compared the previous EPs, however it is worth the effort as once you do connect with the music you are transported into a wondrous place. India Electric Co. have only gone and done it again, mixing traditional/folk and progressive music to great effect. ****
