Album review: LEGION – Redemption

LEGION - Redemption

Rock Company [Release date 18.03.20]

Amazingly this is Legion’s eleventh studio album since forming back in 2010. The band’s line-up has also stayed pretty consistent with vocalist Phil Vincent and guitarist Vince O’Regan joined by bassist Gavin Cooper, drummer Any Pierce and on keyboards Irvin Parratt.

On this album Legion have expanded their musical palate a little. Take for instance ‘Spaceman’ that starts with a nice drums and keys intro, before it becomes like Dio era Rainbow thanks to the atmospheric keys of Irvin Parratt.

For more straight ahead metal, ‘Face To Face’ and ‘Tramp Stamp’ fit the bill nicely. Phil Vincent comes into his own on these sort of tunes, plus adding in the backing vocals creates the icing on the musical cake.

Of course Vince O’Regan fires off a solo in each song, some fast and furious, whilst others are a tad more restrained.

Despite being recorded across two continents the album has a band feel and sound, not like some of the project albums which can sound very formulaic.

Legion know what they are good at, namely riff based, catchy melodic metal and stick to that. If you have not checked them out to date I’d heartily recommend starting with this album. Another satisfying and enjoyable slab of melodic metal. ***1/2
