Album review: OVERLAND – Scandalous

OVERLAND - Scandalous

Escape Music [Release date 18.09.20]

FM vocalist Steve Overland returns with a new album, aided by Tommy Denander, along with Brian Anthony (bass, piano, Hammond) and drummer Brian Tichy (Foreigner, Whitesnake, Dead Daisies et al).

The album’s contrasting styles can be summed up by the opening duo of songs. ‘Don’t Give Up’ shows off the soulful side of Steve Overland’s music and singing, something he manages to also deliver in FM songs. On ‘Never Say Die’ it is a rockier affair, more guitar crunch and rock god singing from Mr Overland. This one sounds like Brian Howe era Bad Company and is an album highlight, not dissimilar to the Lonerider album (well worth seeking out and owning if you don’t already) he was involved in with Bad Company’s Simon Kirke.

The slow bluesy ‘Changing Times’ wouldn’t look out of place on fellow band mate Jim Kirkpatrick’s recent solo album. Nice bit of guitar on this one, highlighting Tommy Denander’s bluesy side of his playing when most will associate him more with melodic hard rock.

‘God Made An Angel’ is a neat mix of an AOR ballad with bluesy undertones, another album stand out.

Not as AOR leaning as his previous albums and possibly too many laid back, soul infused songs, certainly for this reviewer. Still, whenever Steve Overland sings you sit up and take notice, as vocally he is still at the top of his game. ***1/2
