El Toro Records
Spanish bluesman Iker Piris releases his debut album with the Dual Electras – Abdell B. Bop (upright bass) and Andy Martin (drums). Piris has previously released a solo album and been involved with various blues artists in the past decade. He’s also picked up praise from fellow blues players including Kid Ramos.
Iker Piris mines the traditional blues to great effect. ‘I’m Gonna Move’ is a late night blues number, sublime slow guitar from Iker, the steady drumbeat and some lovely rolling piano from Victor Puertas.
‘Dance’ and ‘Helping Hand’ both impress with their rock ‘n’ roll riffs, proper floor fillers. You can imagine both of these going down a treat live. All the songs are written by Iker too, which when you listen to ‘Out Of Control’ you’d swear it was some 60′s number updated.
Special mention to ‘The Hunter’ that closes the album. Mainly instrumental – bar a few ‘huhs’ – it allows Iker Piris to showcase his guitar playing talents. A two minute rock ‘n’ roll strut. A perfect way to round off the album.
Those after a traditional blues meets rock ‘n’ roll fix look no further than this rewarding listen from Iher Piris and his band. ***1/2
