DVD review: DEF LEPPARD – Hits Vegas

DEF LEPPARD - Hits Vegas

Eagle Rock Entertainment

Initially only available as part of the highly popular “London to Vegas” live box set, Def Leppard are now releasing stand-alone versions of their “Hits Vegas, Live at Planet Hollywood” set, these being available in DVD/2CD, Blu-ray/2CD, plus a limited edition transparent blue vinyl LP formats.

Now, it could be argued that Def Leppard have released their fair share of live albums and DVD’s over the last few years, and that is a good point. However, as I stated in my original review of the afore mentioned box set, if you think this is a mere exercise in nostalgia, then think again.

With a massive 28 song setlist, this live show was recorded during the bands residency Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theatre following their recent induction into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. The setlist here has more of a deep cut feel to it as alongside the usual, and very much expected hits, we are treated to the likes of “Billy’s Got A Gun”, “Die Hard The Hunter”, “Too Late For Love” and “Mirror, Mirror (Look In To My Eyes)”, this gives the show a great balance and one that covers all eras of Def Leppard’s lengthy career.

Tracks like “Now”, “Promises”, “Paper Sun”, “Slang” and “Let’s Go” are all good examples of the band’s post “Adrenalize” output and all sound great here. There is also a mid-set acoustic segment in the show, featuring “Let Me Be The One”, “We Belong”, “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” and “Two Steps Behind”.

I may be a massive fan of the band but just have a listen to “Hits Vegas” and you will surely agree that Def Leppard still sound great, still pull in big audiences and are showing no signs of slowing down. *****
