Album review: L.A. GUNS – Renegades

L.A. GUNS - Renegades

Golden Robot Records [Release date 13.11.20]

L.A. Guns, born out of the 1980’s rock scene in Los Angeles and the Sunset Strip, have become synonymous with the Hollywood hair metal rock scene, famous for putting on amazing live shows with a fantastic pedigree of musicians.

Fast forward to November 2020, here we are in the 21st century, with the world facing a global pandemic that is wreaking absolute havoc on the music industry and rock is biting back! The L.A. Guns are back with a new album, demonstrating exactly why they are not only still relevant today and in touch with their fan base, but that they are absolute rock royalty.

RENEGADES is the brand new album from L.A. Guns (Steve Riley, Kelly Nickels, Scott Griffin, Kurt Frohlich), with 3 singles already released it is time to showcase the rest. The singles include the title track, ‘Renegades’ (upbeat, fast, tight production that had me dancing round), the closing track ‘Crawl’ and ‘Well Oiled Machine’, which is deservedly included on Spotify’s ‘Hard Rock’ playlist.

From the opening track’s ‘Don’t Wanna Know’ thumping bass line to the harmonies on ‘You Can’t Walk Away’, Renegades delivers on so many levels, the quality of the song writing, the musicianship, the vocal delivery and the energy that the band oozes. L.A. Guns are at the top of their game and it shows.

Personal favourite tracks s from the album were ‘Witchcraft‘ with its heavy opening riffs and ‘Lost Boys’ with its clever switching from melody into heavy, hard rock – I defy anyone not to enjoy this master class.

The final track and single, ‘Crawl’ is a foot tapping, blast of rock that finishes the album on a real high and leaves you wanting more –if this release is any indicator of the future, rock is alive and kicking ass!

This album is simply excellent – if you like classic rock that’s up to date, this is surely for you. Long may L.A Guns continue reign – I, for one, salute you!  ****
