Quick plays: MARIOS POLITIS, SILENT SKIES, MOTHER ROAD

MARIOS POLITIS This Is My Story

MARIOS POLITIS This Is My Story Alcyone Records [Release date 10.11.20]

Marios Politis is a composer, singer and guitarist from Athens, Greece who has released an album of meaningful and thoughtful songs. The lyrics focus on introspection and personal experiences which many of us can relate to.

It is a mixed musical bag, with an instrumental ‘The Trip’ rounding off the album, before which we have the bluesy ‘My Blanket’ and the alt rock of ‘Days’. A song like ‘How Can I’ wouldn’t look out of place on a Pearl Jam album.

Both ‘London’ and ‘Music’ have wide appeal, both having indie pop/rock melodies at their heart. Liking the use of guitar on each song which rings out clear and precise.

Marios Politis is an artist to keep an eye on and this is a very enjoyable album. ***1/2

SILENT SKIES - Satellites

SILENT SKIES Satellites A Sweet Lemon [Release date 11.12.20]

Silent Skies is a collaboration between Tom S. Englund, vocalist of Evergrey, and virtuoso classical pianist Vikram Shankar. The pair first crossed paths when Englund saw Shankar’s sensitive piano interpretation of Evergrey’s ‘Distance’ on YouTube. As Shankar comments, “I think part of the magic of Silent Skies is that we come from fairly different backgrounds, and do not have identical musical personalities, but we have certain shared musical, aesthetic, and emotional values that make the art we make together really click.”

No surprise then that it is very cinematic in sound, with the emotive singing of Tom S. Englund perfect for the music. Highlights include the aforementioned Evergrey song ‘Distance’ and a brilliant version of the Eurythmics’ hit ‘Here Comes The Rain Again’. Even if you listen to nothing else do give this a listen as they take the song and make it their own. ****

MOTHER ROAD - II

MOTHER ROAD II Metalapolis Records [Release date 19.02.21]

Mother Road first emerged in 2013, named after the legendary Route 66 highway in the USA and their 2014 debut album gained favourable reviews. They are now back with their second album, where the two main men – former Soul Doctor guitarist Chris Lyne and vocalist Keith Slack (ex-Steelhouse Lane, MSG) – are now joined by drummer Zacky Tsoukas (ex-Soul Doctor) and bassist Barry Sparks (ex-Dokken, Ted Nugent).

Think Bad Company with Sammy Hagar on vocals and you won’t be far off from the sound on this album. Keith Slack still has that vocal power (if you don’t own either of the Steelhouse Lane albums go seek them out) as he proves on ‘Cold Heat’, a funk fuelled hard rocker. ‘Ain’t Got The Blues’ is just that, a hard rocking blues number.

The songs don’t overly impress but for a blues based, 70′s hard rock fix it is not too shabby. ***
