IVY GOLD Six Dusty Winds A1 Records/Golden Ivy Records [Release date 12.03.21]
Ivy Gold is built around singer Manou and guitarist Sebastian Eder (Avalon). Rounding out Ivy Gold are drummer Tal Bergman (Joe Bonamassa, Billy Idol, Rod Stewart, Simple Minds, Rock Candy Funk Party & many more), bassist Kevin Moore and keyboard player Anders Olinder (Glenn Hughes, Peter Gabriel, Amy Winehouse, Elliott Randall). A pretty impressive musical CV between them all with many years of experience, both in the studio and performing live.
The title track is the stand out, a beguiling mix of blues with a little gospel on the chorus. Very impressive, as is ‘Believe’ where Anders Olinder plays a bit of tasty Hammond. Indeed, you can’t fault the musicianship on the album, each musician seems to slot seamlessly into each other’s musical parts.
Those who like a little bit of blues guitar, Sebastian Elder gets his chance to shine on ‘Suspicion’, and again on ‘Without You’. The latter song is one of those slow burner blues numbers perfect for a late night listen.
Manou is like a female Glenn Hughes possessing both soul and power when singing. An assured debut from Ivy Gold who will be well worth seeing live once gigs come back again. ***1/2

BLACK PISTOL FIRE Look Alive Black Hill Records [Release date 19.02.21]
Black Pistol Fire comprise vocalist/guitarist Kevin McKeown and drummer/bass synth player Eric Owen, who have spent almost a decade building a dedicated fan base. If the likes of the Arctic Monkeys and the Black Keys float your musical boat then sail on…
For a duo they certainly make plenty of noise, albeit with a handful of guests (four in total). Musically they have the modern vibe of Shinedown on ‘Wildfire’, a touch of dance rock on ‘Never Enough’ (shades of long lost Brit band Hard-Fi on this one) and a lovely bit of guitar twang on ‘Black Halo’, allowing the duo’s love of rock n roll to shine through.
Not bad at all, plenty of variety to enjoy and an album certain to see Black Pistol Fire’s stock rise even higher. ***1/2
