Bandcamp [Release date 31.03.20]
Silver Nightmares were formed in Palermo in 2018 by bassist Gabriele Esposito, drummer Alessio Maddaloni, keyboardist Gabriele Taormina with guitarist Mimmo Garofalo joining shortly after. They wrote, composed and orchestrated this, their first EP, which features guest appearances by vocalists Simone Bonomo and Michele Vitrano, guitarist Tody Nuzzo, flutist Giulio Maddaloni and trumpeter Davide Severino.
‘David The King’ and ‘Light Years Away’ see keyboardist Gabriele Taormina unleash some tasty 70s prog keys. Both songs recall past bands like Kansas and Styx, yet have a modern progressive metal slant. The title track is the stand out song on the EP, utilising the band’s harmony vocals to good effect. You get a radio edit version of the song too, so good value with six songs on the EP.
How can you not like an instrumental based on the classic cartoon character ‘D.D. (Dick Dastardly)’ from Whacky Races? A chance for the band to flex their undoubted musical talents and a great fun to listen to.
I am still not overly struck by the vocals on ‘Dame Nature’, however overall this is a recommended EP for those who like prog/melodic metal with a touch of 70’s prog rock.
Silver Nightmares are currently recording their first full album which will be worth a listen when it is released, until then grab a copy of this EP. ***1/2
