Album review: BROTHER AGAINST BROTHER – S/T

Frontiers Records [Release date 11.06.21]

Frontiers clearly think highly of Brother Against Brother. The label compares this recording by two vocalists, Renan (Electric Mob) Zonta and Nando (Sinistra) Fernandes, relatively unknown outside of their native Brazil, to the Allen/Lande project. That’s off the mark by some distance.

This debut album is produced and written by the label’s inhouse man, Alessandro DelVecchio, who has allowed some decent tunes and choruses to be swamped by the duo’s chest beating histrionics, in almost all circumstances.

His own turgid over-production hasn’t helped. At times you’re thinking the vocalists’ OTT delivery is an attempt to pull away from the production’s suffocating gravitational pull. Only ‘What If’, ‘City Of Gold’ and ‘In The Name Of Life’ survive intact. And maybe ‘Deadly Sins’. These four are well crafted, journeyman rock/metal songs, with the occasional flicker of a welcome similarity to renowned rock band, Fair Warning.

In particular, ‘In The Name Of Life’ is notable for its semi-acoustic approach. The other three are held up by some decent bridges and choruses, and are strong enough to withstand a vocal pounding.

Otherwise, it might well be back to the recording studio equivalent of the drawing board. **
