Wax on Water are fronted by singer, songwriter and producer Maya Damaris who was joined by guitarist Steven Blessing back in 2019. The band released the first of the ‘Drip’ series ‘The Drip- Part 1’ back in November. The full drip album is due in June and it seems to work bands releasing a series of EPs that later emerge on a full album – the Bloody Nerve spring to mind.
Musically Wax On Water draw their musical influences from a wide ranger including 70s rock, grunge, electronica, and industrial.
‘You Know When You Know’ was the lead song off the EP, a fair summation of the band’s sound mixing guitar, synths and the intriguing vocals of Maya Damaris. Hard to draw a comparison but has the rough hew of say Beth Hart on the rockier moments, whilst on ‘The Wrong Way’ has a seductive tone that works well weaved into the guitars. No surprise that this song was chosen for radio play.
‘In The Shadows’ is another primed for airplay, a hypnotic riff and those vocals hit the spot again. ‘All Over Me’ with its neat little rock n roll beat meets electronica is an instant hit on the ears.
Wax On Water fully deserve some of your precious listening time as they have their own unique sound, yet have enough musical touchpoints that make them sound familiar. ***1/2
