Napalm Records [Release date 02.12.22]
Amberian Dawn go full on ABBA tribute mode on their latest album, after doing a sterling job of ABBA’s ‘Lay All Your Love On Me’ (which is also on here) on their previous album, ‘Looking For You’.
What a start with a superb version of ‘Super Trouper’! The vocals of Capri are spot on being full of melody, power and passion. Tuomas Seppälä adds his keyboards wizardry to ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)’, with a funky bit of bass playing by Jukka Hoffren. Both songs have a deep, rich sound and despite the metal riffs the pop melodies of the originals still shines through.
The bouncy keys and guitar riff on ‘Angeleyes’ complements the vocals of Caori, both lead and the layered harmony vocals. What a perfect song to brighten any day.
‘Mamma Mia’ has been heard many times but this metalized version makes the listener fall in love all again with the song. That surely is the mark of a good cover version?
The whole album is wonderful fun to listen to from ‘SOS’ – a symphonic metal treat – through to perhaps a lesser-known ABBA tune, ‘Under Attack’, Amberian Dawn give these classics their own musical stamp of approval.
Melodic metal to put a smile on your face and a perfect winter pick me up. ABBA should perhaps return the favour and cover an Amberian Dawn song?! ****
