Golden Robot Records [release date: 28.11.22]
If any artists can claim to have emerged as true survivors in the post grunge period, it’s Faster Pussycat.
Over two million albums sold, not a world record, but a tidy number just the same. Align that with quarter of a million monthly listeners on Spotify and several million YouTube streams. Successful? Yes. Influential? Yes. Still touring after all these years? Yes. Tour of Australia next month? Yes, and why not.
You just have to doff a respectful hat.
Now on the fast growing Robot Records’ roster, Faster Pussycat (basically just Taime Down + others now) present a surprising reinvention.
‘Like A Ghost’ and ‘Pirate Love’ is a double A side “single” release. No indication if it’s from a “forthcoming” album. So maybe just testing the water.
It’s only the band’s second release of new material since 1992, when their third recording, Whipped (1992) hoisted the primary colours of country, rock and blues high above the scores of Glamrock bands who couldn’t find the exit fast enough.
Thirty years later, the Glamrock 2.0 ‘Like a Ghost’ begins life as a the swaggering, drawling ghost of sunset strip. It’s a walk down memory lane, with just enough grit in the mix to give it contemporary relevance. You’re thinking, well, that’s pretty good, then a fabulous chorus makes a dramatic entrance. A distillation of all the Glamrock / Melodic Rock, pulse quickening hooks you might ever have heard.
It closes with the last line of the chorus : “A little Easy Action on the end, solid gold”.
Nuff said.
The whipsmart ‘Pirate Love’ is a cover of the Johnny Thunders’ classic. It tells us (as if we didn’t know) that the band gets their influences/inspiration from Thunders and his prototype Sex Pistols’ band, New York Dolls. ****
