Album review: CREYE – Weightless

Frontiers [Release date 17.02.23]

After a commercially unsuccessful debut album, it was the addition of August Rauer as vocalist in 2018 that kick started Creye’s career as a melodic rock band.

On the downside, Weightless, their third album, is filled with thematically unimaginative songs, most of which have their fists permanently pumping the air, exhorting us to stand up for truth, justice and etcetera.

But strongly in their favour, the album is brimful of appealingly infectious melodic rock, very much in the Eurorock style of H.E.A.T., Work Of Art and Eclipse.

Rauer seems equally comfortable whispering sweet nothings on ‘Glorious’ and ‘Heading For Venus’ as he does on the heavier stuff.

His quivering voice is particularly striking as it picks up some muscle on the title track, ‘Weightless’ and on ‘Air’. Each song is positioned well inside the lyrical theme of the album, but both carry enough punch to break out of that self imposed lyrical straight jacket.

‘One Step Away’ and ‘Spreading Fire’ could’ve been huge melodic rock songs for today’s audience, but their dependence on formula undercuts their impact. There’s only so much chasing the dream you can take. ***
