Séamus Foley releases a six song EP and as Séamus explains, “This EP came about after I recorded the single (of the same name) remotely during lockdown. I realised I wanted to further explore these ways of recording, which were new to me, to see where this group of songs could go.
All the songs on this recording deal with struggle in some form, whether complex feelings of loss or longing or more simple affairs like the call of the road or having writer’s block. I’ve always been amazed when a song I hear manages to articulate something that I’ve been feeling, and that’s a piece of magic that I’d love to be able to embed in my work: to capture a feeling that people can relate to.”
Joining him on this EP are CJ Hillam (pedal steel guitar, guitar), Lee Smith (drums), Tom Collison (piano & Hammond organ) and Stuart Taylor (bass). Seamus himself is no musical slouch performing guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.
Although only six songs, the EP covers much musical ground from the acoustic folk of ‘Black & White’ through to ‘Ground’, which features sublime pedal steel and piano playing.
‘Colorado Skies’ has been released as a lead track and rightly so as it is a radio friendly piece of Americana. The title track is a soothing mix of country topped by the easy on the ear vocals of Seamus Foley. Any of the six songs on here could be released as singles as they all have their own unique appeal and most importantly, strong melodies and lyrical content.
A finely crafted and highly enjoyable piece of Americana that shows an artist at the peak of his musical powers. ****
