Album review: DYMYTRY – Five Angry Men

AFM Records [Release date : 26.01.24]

Second English language album from Czech Power Metal band, Dymytry, (their sixth overall). The arrival of vocalist, Alen Lubic has made all the difference in creating an international appeal.

Musically, this new album is a granular mix of NDH, Goth Rock and Power Metal, embracing the growing darkness of the age. They push back lyrically at times, with humour and sharply written social commentary.

The anger in the album title is intense, songs are targetted weapons. ‘Enemy List’ takes aim at the corrosive affects of Social Media; the antiwar song, ‘1939’ sits hand in glove with ‘In Death We Trust’, a reference to Oppenheimer’s atomic bomb, warning us of the dangerous parallels between the world then and now. And so on.

Protest songs? Yes.

But, there’s more. Much more. ‘The Revenant’ is a dramatic, immersive heavy metal story of obsessive love. The allegorical ‘Legends Never Die’, (a cover of the Dark Side Of The Moon song), regrets the brevity of fame and indeed life. Then the self explanatory ‘Three Steps To Hell’, full of clanging guitars and harsh vocals leads us, surprisingly, into an anthemic, stadium sized chorus.

Album standout, ‘Dead, Living Dead’ mainlines on the sheer excitement of live music, and the psychological soundscapes created by hugely talented Metal bands who work at the fringes of the genre.

Like the new Dymytry.

The hi impact ‘Everything Is Black’, is the lead single. It’s a tongue in cheek slice of commercially inclined modern metal.

Only the dark notes and industrial/rap metal of the title track let the album down. It’s maybe an effort to push at the boundaries, but it could be anybody.

Meantime, the band kicks off an 8 date tour of Germany and the Czech Republic on album release date. ***1/2
