Rattle Shake Records [Release date 10.05.24]
Album number six from Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown who still don’t look old enough to have made so many albums. Seemingly down to a trio of Tyler Bryant (vocals, guitar) Caleb Crosby (drums), and Graham Whitford (guitar, backing vocals) with bassist Ryan Fitzgerald no longer featured in band line-up photos.
It says a lot about the quality of the album in that the single, ‘Snake Oil’, is perhaps not the stand out. That said, it is still a fine piece of blues rock with an instantly memorable chorus. The ZZ Top fuelled ‘Between the Lines’ or ‘Happy Gets Made’ are the stand outs amongst the stand outs!
The good thing with a Tyler Bryant album is you get the odd curveball, as the beautifully sung gospel blues of ‘Happy Gets Made’. Ruthie Foster duets with Tyler on this one to great effect. Larkin Poe guests on the album’s other quieter moment, ‘One and Lonely’.
Slide guitar joy on ‘Movin’, a song that screams to be played live, whilst ‘Shake You Down’ will clear any stuffy head with its pounding beat and insanely catchy guitar & chorus.
Seeing the album out is ‘Carefree Easy Rollin’ which is a southern rock beauty. Those guitars and drums fit in an easy groove behind Tyler’s vocals.
It’s rock ‘n’ roll done the Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown way and all the better for it. The bigger headline spots and fan base can only be a short time away. Crank it up and enjoy thirty six minutes in the company of one of the finest acts around at the moment. ****1/2
