EP review: REVENANT – What a Time to Be Alive

Facebook [Release date 10.05.24]

Revenant are a new band, although the band’s members have plenty of musical experience, with Sugarman Sam (vocals, guitars) and Matthew Hudson (guitars) both previously in the Dead Jackals. They are joined bassist Robin Nutley and drummer Carl D.

Five songs, clocking in at under twenty minutes, Revenant don’t mess about. ‘Coming Back To Life’ is a big beast of rocker, complete with a rather fine guitar solo and a chorus that you can hang your coat on. Next up ‘Draw The Lines’ keeps the pace going with a thunderous rhythmic beat. The guitar riff and solo aren’t too shabby either!

Now midway through the EP we have ‘The Healer’, a song that packs plenty in, both musically and lyrically, into its four minutes. With a song of this calibre on their debut EP you know the band has that certain “something” to make an impression on the music scene.

‘The Masquerade’ is a foot stomper, with a another fine guitar solo and Sugarman Sam has that perfect voice for southern, blues based rock. It is certainly tough out there for touring bands, however, with a slow burner like ‘Rolling On My Back’, Revenant have a real crowd pleaser. That’s what it is all about as you can have all the moody band photos, rave reviews, but you need the songs. It’s all about the music and Revenant have certainly got a strong musical mojo.

Revenant do southern based, blues hard rock and they do it well. If you love a bit of Blackberry Smoke, Bad Touch and Robert Jon & the Wreck you need the Revenant in your musical life. ****
